Death is the most mysterious reality of life. The word itself triggers a negative connotation and emotion in most humans. Most humans fear death because it is a mystery. Humans never know what happens after death occurs.
In some societies, the word ‘death’ is refrained from even uttering as they believe that if the word death does not come in one’s head, it will not come in real life too. But in honesty, death is the only sure thing that is going to happen to us. We are all going to die one day! So, knowing or talking about death should be helping live well and die well than disturbing well!
There was a beautiful story in the great Hindu Epic Mahabharat when five brothers Pandavs were sent for 12 years exile after losing in the gamble with their stepbrothers.
One day, it happened that they were in the middle of a jungle and very thirsty. No water source was nearby. So, Bhim, the bravest among them, said he would search and fetch water. He found a big lake and was about to drink water. As if coming from the sky, a loud invisible overhead voice interrupted and said, “Hey dear! Don’t drink that water. It’s poisonous. Answer my questions first and drink later.”
Bhim was too much dried, so he hastily drank the water and fell unconscious beside the lake. The same thing happened to the other three brothers, namely Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev. Finally, Yudhisthir, the oldest and wisest brother among them, came. Seeing the precarious situation of his brothers, he was shocked and started answering questions of Yakshya.
Yakshya asked many questions to Yudhisthir. One question was that what the most astonishing thing in the world is. Yudhisthir replied,
“Many people are dying every day. We often hear the death of the near and dear ones too. Still, people do not think about their death. They think that other people die. This is the most astounding thing,” Yudhisthir replied.
Yes, this is the unfortunate reality for most human beings. After being satisfied with the answers, Yakshya revived all his brothers and made the water drinkable.
People seen right there yesterday might be no more today. Where do they go when they leave their physical body? We know the body gets cremated or buried. If not burned also, the body will decay within a few days and becomes compost into the earth. So, where do people evaporate after the death strikes? This question should have the answer.
It’s an unusual happening. We shouldn’t ignore it. Even if we ignore death and try to live, forgetting everything, death will not overlook us. Hence, let’s try to look upon the various aspects of death.
There has been a lot of work regarding bypassing death and living forever physically. The development of the Ayurved, Methuselah method and search for the nectar of youth has been going on for millennia. In the eastern culture and wisdom, the Rishis, the monk scholars, had propounded the art of longevity, i.e., Ayurved.
In the west, Ponce De Leon was famous for his legendary search for the fountain of youth. Even the Indiana Jones movies were inspired by the search for the nectar of immortality. People have managed to stretch their life span by all these methods, but nobody could have escaped death until date.
There have been fascinating stories of Yogis and masters of meditation living in the Himalayas eternally young and healthy. The Mahaavatar Babaji is the most famous among them who are supposed to live for thousands of years.
Some authentic yogis have said that they have met the Babaji and it becomes very substantial evidence for his timeless existence. Sadhguru said that great Yogis like Babaji are ‘Nirman Kaya Yogi,’ meaning they can recreate their physical body instantly even after death. The Yogi understands the basic mechanics of life and can play with life or death as they wish. Still, someday they also have to leave the body. Even the great lord like Ram, Krishna and Buddha had to depart the world when the time came.
Modern science is also searching for measures to avoid death. The vast medical machinery and facilities like ICU, Ventilators are created for this purpose. Recently, new techniques like DNA modification, stem cell generation, cloning, etc., are going through researches and results are on the way. Scientists claim that if stem cell generation succeeds, humans can replace every malfunctioning organ and live a very long life. Despite all these efforts, death pervades everywhere and every time.
According to World Population Review, on average, about 164,000 people die every day worldwide. That’s a considerable number of deaths daily!
Nearly a quarter-million people throbbing with life yesterday vanished today! It is a fact that seemingly young and healthy also die, not only sick and old ones.
The awareness should be there among us that we are also going to die. We shouldn’t live life like nothing is going to happen to us. We should prepare for death. We get training for jobs, education and many other things. But have we geared up for the inevitable happening of our life, i.e., The End?
How to prepare then? There is no definite answer for it. First of all, we have to know what death is. We need to be clear about death.
Due to a lack of clarity, people fear death. If we know death is just leaving the body and just the movement of life from physical dimension to non-physical, we will not fear death. Then, we should remind ourselves that we are mortal beings at least once or twice a day. If we do that, we will live our life to the fullest. There will be no time for bullshit! We should see life in terms of moments, not months or years. If we are aware, there is so much life happening moment to moment. We should not be out of track and spoil even a moment in unnecessary things because it will not spare us a moment when death comes.
So live each moment in your best possible way so that when death comes, we will be glad that we lived a wonderful life and pass to the next dimension gracefully!
According to Sadhguru, another method is to put our hands in the soil for at least one hour a day, i.e., gardening activities. If the body touches the earth for a specific time, the elemental memory is awakened and realizes it is just part of the earth. Above all, our body is just the complex amalgamation of five elements: Ether (Aakash), air (Vayu), fire (Agni), water (Jal) and soil (Prithvi). Even the DNA’s essential four components correspond with these elements. Science ignores the ether as it permeates everywhere.
So, getting in touch with the five elements (especially soil, as it contains all other four elements) on an everyday basis works well to make the body remember its mortality.
One of the best ways to prepare for death is doing yoga by learning from an enlightened master. Once the consciousness is raised, it will guide us from inward towards the right path.
Ram Das said that death is like getting off a tight shoe. Here, the body is the tight shoe and what gets off is life. And the life we are! So, don’t worry about death. Live life joyfully till the end, and death will also be a blissful process.
In spiritual reality, there is no death. There is life and life alone moving from one dimension to another. Death is mere leaving of the physical body but life continues afterward. After roaming in the universe for a certain period, life will find the suitable womb according to its tendencies and take rebirth until all the Karmic memory is empty.
Strangely, people are searching for immortality physically, not knowing that they are the immortals spiritually. If we see this thing experimentally from inward, there will be no more fear of death. This clarity has to dawn upon humanity to live a complete life. Om!
Do not fear
Do not fear anything
Not even death
You are bigger than death
Look straight into death’s eye
There you will see your immortality
When you come as human
You are supposed to be
The master of your own destiny
No matter what the stars say
Or astrology convey.
